Painters Painting

Eminent documentarian Emile de Antonio got his start in movies distributing the 1959 Beat classic Pull My Daisy (screening along with Delphine Seyrig's Be Pretty and Shut Up as part of our Seyrig series) and the painters and poets who appear in that film were participants in a burgeoning creative milieu in which de Antonio also played an important part. Some ten years later de Antonio filmed studio visits with the leading painters of the day—Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and others. Interspersed with observations from theorist Clement Greenberg, art dealers, and collectors, Painters Painting captures the exuberance of the New York art world at the intersection of Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, Minimalism, and Pop art.
