Hansen-Løve’s assured debut feature is a generous, unflinching look at a loving family gradually undone by addiction. Spanning a period of over a decade in the life of a couple, their child, and their extended family, the film maintains a feeling of intimacy and immediacy in each scene as time passes for the characters, both binding them together and wrenching them apart. A study of the gaps and interruptions in life, its uneven rhythms and unspoken mysteries, All Is Forgiven investigates what love can and cannot withstand and contemplates the elusive possibility of recovery and reconciliation.
