Student Internships (unpaid)

The Digital Media Team is BAM/PFA's internship program for those interested in learning how digital media can support the educational mission of a museum and film archive. UC Berkeley students are given preference, but students from other institutions and members of the community are also eligible for internships. Interns engage in still- and moving-image production, building a media archive for long-term retention of digital assets and serving out images and video on the BAM/PFA website. The efforts of the Digital Media Team are supported by the museum's Digital Media Lab, which houses a state-of-the-art digital video editing system and a high-end scanning station. For information on joining the Digital Media Team, contact Jen Pearson at jpearson@berkeley.edu.

Internships in the PFA Library and PFA Curatorial departments are available for UC Berkeley students. Each semester the PFA Library offers Film 197A. Students spend three hours per week helping to maintain PFA’s documentation files, and attend one lecture per week on research strategies and resources in cinema studies. Each semester the PFA Curatorial department offers 197C, a curating internship of three hours per week, culminating in the students curating a program of student-made work from either local film schools or the UC Berkeley campus. The library internship is open to Film Studies majors, who can enroll through Telebears; instructor approval is required for non-majors. The curatorial internship is open to Film Studies and Digital Arts majors (other students may apply); instructor approval is required.

Work-Study Opportunities

BAM/PFA employs dozens of undergraduates and a few graduate students through the campus work-study program. There are opportunities for security guards, assistants for marketing, development, and other administrative offices, theater cashiers and ushers, bookstore and library help.

Work-study positions at BAM/PFA are listed at http://workstudy.berkeley.edu.

Volunteer Opportunities

The PFA Library works closely with volunteers, who help with gathering film-related materials and maintaining the library collection. Contact Jason Sanders at jsand@berkeley.edu to sign up for the next volunteer training session.

BAM/PFA also has volunteer opportunities in the Visitor Services Department. For more information or to apply, contact Visitor Services Coordinator Katy Kanfer at kkanfer@berkeley.edu, or ask for an application at the museum's Bancroft admissions desk.

Student Committee

The BAM/PFA Student Committee’s mission is to connect students with BAM/PFA. The committee is made up of fifteen students from a range of academic backgrounds and interests, with a common interest in art and film and a commitment to making them part of students’ lives at Cal.

The application and interview process for the BAM/PFA Student Committee takes place at the beginning of the fall semester. Committee members make a year-long commitment, meeting once each week and spending additional time working on a variety of projects and events. They also spend time learning more about the museum and archive, meeting with staff, and finding out what goes on behind the scenes. Representatives from the committee attend a number of BAM/PFA staff meetings, as well as meetings of the Board of Trustees.

Film and Video Makers at Cal

“Film and Video Makers at Cal” is an annual series at PFA that brings together young filmmakers and curators for several spring programs. Student curators from various departments, mentored by PFA film curator Kathy Geritz, select works by UC Berkeley students representing a wide range of interests, aesthetics, and academic backgrounds. For more information, contact Kathy Geritz at kgeritz@berkeley.edu.

The University of California, Berkeley is committed to diversity in its student body, faculty, and staff. We invite all qualified people to apply.
