St. Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 329-c. 390), one of the four Greek Fathers and a Doctor of the Church, was the son of the bishop of Nazianzus, in Cappadocia. From 379 to 381 Gregory served as bishop of Constantinople. He was one of the most eloquent writers on the doctrine of the Trinity and played a key role in defending the Church against Arianism, a heretical sect that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ.
