BAMPFA AR App Fills the Air with Messages of Love

Love is in the air throughout the Bay Area, with a little high-tech help from BAMPFA and our friends at Goodby Silverstein & Partners and Adobe. Free the Love is a new augmented reality app designed in the spirit of Hippie Modernism to spread messages of peace and love everywhere.

The app is available for iOS beginning February 7 in the App Store, and shortly thereafter for Android in Google Play (search "BAMPFA"). Once downloaded, use your phone's camera to search for geodesic "love balloons" you'll find floating in the air—particularly near landmarks associated with the Summer of Love—and tap the balloons to release the messages inside. You may also write your own messages of love and leave them for others to find, and take and share photos of the love you've spread.

The "Love Tour" element of the app takes users on a geolocated journey to the Summer of Love in the Bay Area, through the sites, stories, and images of the counterculture. The Love Tour is a companion to BAMPFA's major new exhibition Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia, on view February 8–May 21.

"We could all use a little more love, especially these days," says Jeff Gillette, creative director at Goodby Silverstein & Partners, the creative agency that worked with BAMPFA to develop Free the Love. "The Free the Love app turns the skies into a celebration of love. What could be more modern—or hippie—than that?"

Spread the love and share your Free the Love messages with @BAMPFA on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
