Orson Welles’ London, January 17

We explored the work of the magnificent Orson Welles in a PFA series last spring, but there is still more to discover. Stefan Drössler, director of the Munich Filmmuseum, has amassed the world’s largest collection of Welles rarities, working closely with the filmmaker’s longtime companion Oja Kodar. Drössler joins us to present two special programs that illuminate the less familiar corners of Welles’s career, ranging from TV ephemera to tantalizing excerpts from unrealized film projects.

Saturday, January 17, 2009
5:00 p.m. “My Name Is Orson Welles”
Introduced by Stefan Drössler. Excerpts from TV programs depict Welles as an indefatigable globetrotter. Plus a compilation of Welles’s takes on Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice.

Sunday, January 18, 2009
2:00 p.m. Unfinished Works by Welles
Introduced by Stefan Drössler. Fragments from the legendary thriller The Deep, as well as The Dreamers and Don Quixote.

Co-presented by Goethe-Institut San Francisco.
