The Legend of Rita, April 4

Volker Schlöndorff gave the New German Cinema its literary wing in expert adaptations such as Young Törless (1966), The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975), and The Tin Drum (1979). His films then and now have dealt incisively with themes of individual morality in an at best ambiguous political order.

Schlöndorff is artist-in-residence on the UC Berkeley campus during the first week of April. For information on his campus appearances please call The Townsend Center at (510) 643-9670 or visit their website at http://townsendcenter.berkeley.edu.
