The remakes don’t have a thing on the original—this fuelish feature has motor mayhem, fugitive truckers, a jazz score by Chet Baker, and a creamy, dreamy ’54 Jaguar XK120. It may not have Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, but it’s got Dorothy Malone driving her faster pussycat and John Ireland sitting beside her with the wind whipping his dashing ’do. Ireland’s on the lam from the law, heading for Mexico, when he snatches Ms. Malone’s jazzed-up Jag. They call it carjacking and she’s his Jill. A couple of roadblocks later, we find the driven duo hugging the turns at the Jaguar Open Sports Car Race in Monterey with the sirens in their rearview mirror. The Fast and the Furious is a crash course in fast cats, cool jazz, and careening cars. Bring a blanket and a picnic, and arrive early while there’s still plenty of varoom!
