| 6:30 p.m. | Our Heedless Wars Randa Chahal Sabbag (France, 1995) |
Presented in memory of Randa Chahal Sabbag, who passed away in August 2008.
(Nos guerres imprudents). Randa Chahal Sabbag began filming the seventeen-year Lebanese civil war in 1976, and recording her politically active family on video in 1983. Drawing on these intertwined preoccupations, Our Heedless Wars is a thought-provoking journey of rediscovery, documenting the filmmaker’s return home from Paris, where she lived in self-imposed political exile, to Lebanon, where many of her family remained. “I wanted to tell a story, but it was hard to find a logic to these images, to the war, to the dead, to the Israeli invasion, to the Syrian presence, to the reconstruction of Beirut, hard to find a logic to the pain,” she said. “My family provided the link with which I could give shape to the images of the city.”
