7:30 p.m. The Last Man on Earth
Ubaldo Ragona, Sidney Salkow (Italy/U.S., 1964)

Introduced by Dave Taylor

Dave Taylor is a Bay Area filmmaker and producer of The Dead Report, a video podcast dead-icated to covering the zombie horror genre.

(L'ultimo uomo della terra). Once revivified as The Omega Man and soon to be flatlined as a mega-spectacle starring Will Smith, this deadpan feast of the undead just won't die. Nor should it. Based on Richard Matheson's highly digestible I Am Legend, you could say it was the first genuine zombie flick to rise from the grave—and it still feels as fresh as newly turned topsoil. With bloodless restraint, Vincent Price plays Morgan, "l'ultimo uomo," as his Italian producers called him. A vampiric virus has swept the globe, wasting all in its wake. Those who weren't incinerated in the hideous "Pit" are doomed to rise again, lusting for—and I'm gonna go out on a limb here—body parts to rend. Miraculously immune, Morgan is holed up in suburbia: by day, he forages through the last scraps of Western Civ; by night, he repels the onslaught of the undead. Being the last man on earth is a lonely fate, but it sure beats joining those deadheads on the front lawn.
