5:00 p.m. John Canemaker: Marching to a Different Toon
John Canemaker/Winsor McCay

Presentation by John Canemaker

In this special presentation, John Canemaker discusses and demonstrates his approach to creating animated films on serious subjects. Still graphics illuminating the artist's process will be presented along with a selection of his independent and sponsored shorts. In the Oscar-winning The Moon and the Son (2005, 28 mins, With voices of Eli Wallach and John Turturro, Beta SP), Canemaker offers an ambivalent yet empathetic and nuanced remembrance of his Italian American father. Bridgehampton (1998, 6 mins, 35mm) is a vibrant, painterly study of the artist's garden. Confessions of a Stardreamer (1978, 9 mins, 35mm) whimsically illustrates the dreams and realities of a performer, while John Lennon's Sketchbook (1986, 4.5 mins, 35mm) brings Lennon's drawings to life. Bottom's Dream (1983, 6.5 mins, 35mm) is a Shakespearean fantasia played out in a panoply of techniques; The Wizard's Son (1981, 10 mins, 35mm) is an homage to Silly Symphonies. Among the other works on the program are never-before-seen pencil tests for Canemaker's animated sequence in The World According to Garp and excerpts from award-winning commissions such as You Don't Have to Die and Break the Silence: Kids Against Child Abuse.
