In Conversation

  • Critic Neil Young writes on film for Sight & Sound, MUBI Notebook, The Hollywood Reporter, and other publications.

The subject: the siege of Leningrad during World War II. There are no words, no music, only sounds and pictures of the slowly dying city—Blockade consists entirely of silent footage of this historical event, to which Loznitsa has added an evocative soundtrack of natural sound effects. “Loznitsa has taken a different and imaginative approach to the compilation documentary,” writes Denise Youngblood in The Russian Review, calling it “one of the most important Russian movies of the last decade.”
