| COPYRIGHT HOLDERS SURVEY
Original Telephone Interview Script
Hello, my name is ___, and I'm calling from the Pacific Film
Archive Library at UC Berkeley. I wondered if I could spend
a few minutes with someone there to ask about your procedures
concerning granting permission to use copyrighted material.
1. Who in your institution handles copyright clearance? What
is their title?
Hello, my name is _______ and I'm calling from the Pacific
Film Archive Library at UC Berkeley. I wonder if I could have
a few minutes of your time to ask you about your procedures
concerning granting permission to use copyrighted material.
If this isn't a good time for you, I'd be happy to call back
when it's more convenient for you. The reason I'm calling
is because our library received a grant from the Institute
for Museum and Library Services to study the permission process
for using copyrighted materials in the digital environment.
2. Do you have any written guidelines regarding what kinds
of uses you permit of your copyrighted material?
If so, could we receive a copy?
Do you have different policies for reproduction electronically
vs. reproduction on paper? (Please describe.)
3. I would also like to talk to you about obtaining permission
for use of your materials in the PFA CineFiles database. What
we are doing is scanning and indexing materials, such as reviews,
film notes, press kits, and other documents from many different
publishers, which we make available on the web to users at
no charge, with permission of the copyright holder. Since
we are a nonprofit research institution, we normally seek
blanket permission from copyright holders to freely display
their material. Would you be willing to grant us permission
to do this with your materials? [Give them URL of our website:
http://www.mip.berkeley.edu/cinefiles/ ]
4. Would your answer be different if certain restrictions
in how people could use your materials were applied, for example:
Password protection
Read-only access
Other technological restrictions
If it isn't possible to make the material available without
fees, what kind of fee structure would you require? Or would
you be interested in a system with links to an online clearing
center like copyright.com?
