THE CONSORTIUM FOR THE ARTS & THE ARTS RESEARCH CENTER

THE CONSORTIUM
Founded in 1998, the Consortium for the Arts brings together UC Berkeley's highly regarded
visual and performing arts departments with its world-class art museum, film archive, and
performing arts center, in order to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and promote the arts
at Berkeley. To fulfill this mission, the Consortium:
  • supports collaborative projects among artistic disciplines, and encourages
collaboration between artists and scholars in other disciplines
  • arranges substantive interactions between students and visiting artists
  • advocates the integration of the arts into general education at Berkeley
  • encourages students to experience and reflect upon the arts while at Berkeley
  • supports interdisciplinary research in art production, scholarship, and criticism

THE ARTS RESEARCH CENTER
In 2001, the Consortium established the Arts Research Center (ARC), the first UC Berkeley
research unit devoted exclusively to the arts. ARC aims to create a deeper appreciation within
the academic community of art-making as a vital form of research that both interprets and
re-imagines our world.
