Grants for Projects in the Arts

FAQs:

What does the Consortium for the Arts support with its granting program?
The Consortium for the Arts makes funds available to support interdisciplinary projects that enhance the
vitality of the arts on the UC Berkeley campus and provoke intellectual conversation about the arts.
Projects may involve bringing one or more visiting artists to the campus, or may be collaborations between
campus artists, producers, and scholars.

Through its granting program, the Consortium for the Arts supports:

  • collaborative projects among the artistic disciplines, and collaboration
    between artists and scholars in other disciplines;
  • substantive interactions between students and visiting artists;
  • improving the integration of the arts into general education at Berkeley;
  • and increasing the number of students who experience and reflect upon
    the arts while at Berkeley.

The grant program has two components:

1. Support for Major Projects
Each year the Consortium issues a Call for Proposals seeking requests for support for major projects
to take place in the following academic year.  Our goal is to allocate funds (usually $3,000-10,000) to
campus units to support collaborative, interdisciplinary arts projects that support one or more of the
goals described above.
Next application deadline:
Saturday, December 1, 2007 for 2008-2009 Projects
Next workshop for prospective applicants:
Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 4 pm, 205 Dwinelle Annex
Please rsvp to micheler@berkeley.edu by November 8, 2007
NOTE: If you are working on a project for next academic year, and the deadline for major proposals
has already passed, you may submit a proposal under the current-year guidelines described below.

2. Support for Current-Year Projects
In support of the goals described above, the Consortium also accepts proposals for projects in the
current academic year on a rolling basis; applicants are encouraged to submit their proposals as far
in advance as possible.  Limited funds are available for current-year projects; grants are usually in the
range of $500 to $2000.  Requests for $1000 or less are reviewed by the Consortium Director;
requests over $1000 are reviewed by the full Consortium board.

Does the Consortium provide funding for class field trips?
At this time, the Consortium does not have funds available to support class field trips to arts events,
though we can sometimes arrange substantial discounts for UC Berkeley classes attending course-related
shows at Cal Performances. For more information on this and other programs that provide field trip funding
to UC Berkeley faculty and graduate student instructors, please see the Resources section of our Online
Handbook of Teaching with the Arts.

Does the Consortium offer curriculum development grants?
The Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley offers grants to Berkeley faculty and graduate students
instructors to develop courses that integrate the arts. Please click here for more information.

Who is eligible to apply?
Proposals may be submitted by UC Berkeley permanent or visiting faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate
