When is Art Research - presentation by Greg Niemeyer, Assistant Professor, Art Practice/New Media, UC Berkeley
In summary, I still believe that Art is never research, at least good art, much like good research is usually not art. They are as fundamentally different ambitions as love and business, although at times they may involve common methods.
However, it is beneficial, nay essential for the practicioners of art and research to collaborate, especially in an university in the classical sense of the word. Without collaboration, I see our culture diverging, and gaining in weakness and instability...the voyage to the moon was an artist's imagination first, so was the robot, the television, and even the internet. In fact it is probably hard to come up with any scientific, technical or cultural advance which was not prefigured by any artist's vision first.
